After three decades, how do you remain motivated?

David McDonald states that work is never dull due to the constantly changing needs of their customers. These needs make the day exciting and challenge the team to innovate and form the best solution for our customers.

What is the future of OSI Group?

Much like the past says, David McDonald. The fact of the matter is that the goals that have led the company to its current state are what is going to help it grow in the future.

How has OSI been able to keep up with a changing world?

Being able to adapt quickly and take the necessary precautions is essential in an ever-changing world like today. Currently, customers want to have the best local ingredients they can get when the time comes when their preferences change OSI is ready.

How does OSI promote the entrepreneurial spirit?

David McDonald comments on how the motivation for innovation really comes not from top-level executives or anyone within the company, but from the clients themselves. Often they ask for the team to create something new or improve on a menu item. The team naturally fires up the kitchen and begins to create until they have found the perfect solution for the customer.



OSI Group Expands In Australia

OSI Group is prepared to establish itself permanently in Australia. The company just completed a merger with Turi Foods which is an Australian-based operation. The two companies believe that shared ownership will help both organizations who have very similar business models. Turi Foods operates out of Thomastown, Victoria Australia and has facilities throughout the state. The company is a supplier to Quick Service restaurants, specialty chicken retailers, supermarkets and butcher shops. It is the largest meat processor in Australia.

OSI Group is a privately owned organization that has been supplying food service companies, restaurants and markets for decades. COO David McDonald supervised the merger and will work with leadership at Turi Foods to ensure a smooth transition. Turi foods will continue to operate out of the Victoria Australia and looks forward to being a part of the OSI team.

OSI Group began as a meat market over 100 years ago. The company was family-owned and founded by a German immigrant named Otto Kolschowsky. He named the company Otto and Sons and ran it with his family. Over the years Otto and Sons became known as the number one supplier of meat to restaurants in the Chicago area. In the 1950’s Otto and Sons was discovered by Ray Kroc and the McDonald’s Corporation.

Otto and Sons developed a great reputation with the McDonald’s Corporation and was soon selected to be their number one meat supplier. The company built a state-of-the-art meat processing plant to cater specifically to McDonalds. Over the years it grew with the restaurant chain and eventually became one of the largest meat suppliers in the world.

In the 1960s Otto and Sons became known as OSI Group and began doing international business. OSIĀ Group provides many products including hot dogs, bacon, beef, and poultry. It has a client list that includes Starbucks, Subway, Papa John’s Pizza and Pizza Hut. Forbes ranked OSI as the 58th largest privately owned company in the world. It has a net worth that is in the billions of dollars.

OSI currently has processing plants operating in different countries. It has a worldwide workforce of over 20,000 people. OSI is able to maintain such a high-powered staff by implementing sophisticated hiring practices. The recruiting efforts are designed to bring in the kind of people that belong with the organization.


OSI Food Solutions Doubles Chicken Production

OSI Food Solutions in Spain has expanded its pant to boost the production of chicken. Following an increase in the demand for chicken products, OSI Group has been forced to expand the pant so that it can meet the huge demand coming from Spain and Portugal. According to food consumption data in the two countries, the demand for chicken products has gone up by 8 percent. The production capacity of the plant is expected to hit 24,000 tons from 12,000.

With the recent expansion of this plant, OSI Group is expected to increase its total production of beef, chicken and pork product to 45,000 tons annually. The expansion has not only created benefits for the company but has increased job opportunities for the local community. With the new expansion, the number of workers is expected to increase from the current 140 to 160. Among the positions which were created after the expansion is that of the product development manager. The company overemphasis on the need of skilled and hardworking employees and therefore the position will be filled by people who genuinely qualify for the job.

OSI Group decided to expand the firm so that they can adapt to the changing needs of the market. The most important thing for business is to read the developments in the market and act accordingly. Part of the developments which have occurred in the company includes construction of refrigeration rooms, packaging, and storage rooms as well as the receiving areas. In total, the company has added 22, 600 square feet of space.

According to the COO of OSI Group, the ongoing expansion of the company is part of the managementsā€™ attempts to expand the food service industry as well as growing portfolio of products. The management is pleased with the recent expansion which has seen the company employ more people and increase its products to the people.

One of the goals of OSI Group led by the CEO Sheldon Lavin is to offer services which are in line with the needs of the people. The company is emphasizing on the sustainability in its production. The plant that has been built in Toledo, Spain has reduced power consumption in the plant by about 20 percent. The plant is built in such a way that it is energy efficient. Due to the commitment the firm has shown in applying sustainable means of production, it has been supported by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund in its expansion plans.

Iowa State University graduate David McDonald has played a major role in helping the OSI Group become a leader in the global food production industry. When McDonald joined the company in 1987, he brought a degree in animal science and the unique prospective and work ethic of someone who had grown up on a farm. While those things were impressive, the skillset David McDonald possesses has proven to be crucial to company’s growth. His willingness to work closely with, learn from and teach people on every level of the company have made him a beloved member of the team at the OSI Group.

When David McDonald joined the company, the OSI Group had just begun its transition from an Illinois based company focused on providing ground beef for McDonald’s and packaged meat for restaurants and supermarkets into a company with ambitious plans for international growth. McDonald helped the OSI Group establish a customer base in China and his ability to handle the often complex negotiations with government officials and local producers has helped the company grow to become China’s largest poultry producer. Although the OSI Group now has 10 poultry processing plants in China, McDonald says he’s proudest of the work he did with the most recently opened one.

Another region into which the OSI Group is developing a significant presence with David McDonald’s help is in Europe. To increase the number of customers they serve in Europe, McDonald helped the OSI Group acquire Dutch food processing company Baho Foods. He also played a prominent role in the acquisition of UK based Flagship Europe. By helping add those two companies to the OSI Group family, McDonald has assisted the company in having a customer base in Europe that encompasses more than two dozen countries. The company now has 70 facilities and customers in 85 countries around the world.
